Staying near Porto airport
One of the few European cities where the airport hotel is usually the wrong answer, for a reason you can check on a metro map.
Francisco Sa Carneiro sits eleven kilometres north of the city, and metro line E runs from under the terminal to Trindade in about half an hour. That single fact removes most of the reasons airport hotels exist.
In a city where the airport is an hour out and the last train leaves at ten, an airport hotel buys you sleep. Here it usually buys you a night in a business park instead of a night in one of the best-looking cities in Europe, for a saving that a taxi eats.
The four cases where it is right
- A departure before roughly six in the morning. The metro does not run early enough, and a pre-dawn taxi from the centre costs more than the difference between the rooms.
- An arrival after the metro stops, roughly one in the morning, with an onward journey the next day rather than a stay in the city.
- A pure transit night — you are changing planes, or driving on north or into Spain in the morning, and you will not see Porto at all.
- A car collected at the airport for a trip that starts somewhere else. Parking at the terminal and leaving early is genuinely simpler than doing it from the old town.
If none of those describes your trip, the airport hotel is a night you have paid for and not used.
An airport room is often cheaper per night than a central one. Add two taxi fares to and from the terminal, subtract the evening you would otherwise have spent in the city, and the gap usually closes or reverses. The metro ride that makes the airport convenient is the same ride that makes the airport hotel unnecessary.
What "near the airport" actually means here
There is no hotel strip attached to the terminal in the way there is at some airports. What exists is a scatter of properties across Maia and Pedroucos, a few minutes away by shuttle or taxi, on roads rather than in a district. Check whether a shuttle exists and what hours it runs, because at four in the morning the answer matters and the listing rarely says.
The alternative worth knowing about: the metro line into town passes through several stations before it reaches the centre. A room near one of those is neither the airport nor the old town, and it is a reasonable compromise for an early flight if you also want dinner somewhere real.
